HADLEY, Mass. -- Bates junior John Murphy (Yarmouth, Maine) has been named to the NESCAC Men's Soccer All-Conference Team, announced Thursday by the New England Small College Athletic Conference. The midfielder/forward was named to the All-NESCAC Second Team as a forward.
Murphy was able to amass the most points for a Bates player since the 2005 season, in spite of a frustrating season for the Bobcats, who went 4-10 and winless in NESCAC play, including seven one-goal losses. With opposing defenses generally geared toward stopping him and keeping the ball away from him, Murphy totaled nine goals and four assists, for 22 points.
Murphy ranked second in the NESCAC this season in points per game (1.57); he was also third in goals per game (0.67) and tied for sixth in assists per game (0.29).
It is Murphy's first postseason honor at Bates, and he is the first Bobcat to receive All-NESCAC honors since Clark Winchell '09 did in 2008.
His two-goal, two-assist performance in Bates' win over Southern Maine demonstrated his extraordinary skills: on one free kick from well back in Bates' end of the field, Murphy kicked the ball at least 70 yards to Tyler Grees, who headed the ball in for a score. Later in the game, scored on a direct kick from at least 40 yards away with a shot that tucked just under the crossbar and into the very top left corner of USM's goal.
