HARTFORD, Conn. -- The No. 9 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team defeated No. 11 Amherst College 6-3 in the third-place match Sunday at the first annual NESCAC Squash Championship, winning at all of the top six spots.

Previously in the tournament, Bates rolled over Tufts University 8-1 in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC Championship on Saturday at Trinity College. The Bobcats, seeded third in the tournament, then fell to No. 2 seed Williams by a 6-3 score.

Tufts is ranked No. 16 by the College Squash Association, and Williams is ranked No. 7. The Ephs will meet national champion Trinity Sunday afternoon in the championship.

Bates' No. 1 player, two-time junior All-American Ricky Weisskopf (San Salvador, El Salvador), is 18-2 this season. Not to be overshadowed, junior Sean Wilkinson (London, England) is now 16-4, having defeated his opponents from top programs such as Cornell, Hobart, F&M, Navy, Denison, Williams and Amherst. "Wilkinson's contributions to the team, as player, co-captain and spiritual leader cannot be overstated," said head coach John Illig.

Senior co-captain Gary Kan (Hong Kong) is 11-8 in the No. 3 spot, having another exceptional year for Bates.  And freshmen No. 4 Kush Mahan (Gainesville, Fla.) and No. 5 Jordan Greenberg (Malvern, Pa.) won a collective 5 out of 6 matches at NESCACs.  Mahan is 9-4 on the season, having battled a sore back;  and Greenberg has amassed a 15-5 record, to mirror the men's team record, which currently stands at 15-5.

"Greenberg has frequently played in the No. 4 spot this season, and the addition of these two freshmen has revitalized the team," said Illig.

Sophomores Chip Russell (West Hartford, Conn.), Marc Taggart (Skippack, Pa.), Deacon Chapin (Cambridge, Mass.) and Charlie Johnson (Atlanta, Ga.), playing in the #6-9 positions are also all having exceptional years.

Bates (15-5) will host Colby on Thursday at 6 p.m.
