Mahan, Greenberg and Katz compete at CSA Individual Nationals

HARTFORD, Conn. - On the first day of competition at the men’s CSA Individual Championships hosted at Trinity College, the Bobcats were represented by seniors Kush Mahan, Jordan Greenberg and junior Will Katz. Both Mahan and Katz competed in the Molloy Cup at the Individual Nationals last season.

Mahan (Kalamazoo, Mich.) was selected to play in the Pool Cup (A Division). In his first match of the championships, Mahan met a familiar foe in Franklin & Marshall's top player, Gabriel Del Melo. The two squared off two weeks ago in the CSA Team Nationals with Mahan defeating Melo in three of four tightly contested games.

Melo got the best of Mahan on this day (11-5, 11-6, 11-2). Mahan next had a tough match in the first round of the consolation bracket, losing to Dartmouth's Nicholas Sisodia to end his run at the championship by a 3-1 score.

Both Greenberg (Malvern, Pa.) and Katz (Bronxville, N.Y.) were selected to compete in the Molloy Cup (B Division). Greenberg advanced to the round of 32 with a win (11-9, 11-5, 11-3) against fellow NESCAC athlete, Robert Broadfoot of Wesleyan University winning three straight games. Greenberg next took on the fifth-ranked Matt Domenick of Rochester University, but came up short losing in three straight games (11-5, 11-3, 11-3).

Katz received a first-round bye and began his championship run in the round of 32, where he faced a familiar opponent. Katz took on NESCAC foe, Christian Henze of Williams College. Katz has defeated Henze twice this season, the first time coming in this same venue (Trinity College) during the NESCAC semifinals and again at the CSA Team National at Yale two weeks ago. However, the third time was the charm for Henze, who won the match to end Katz' run in the championship (11-5, 11-7, 9-11, 11-7). All three matches that these two players faced off in were tremendously competitive, going to five games in the first meeting and four games in the final two meetings.

Both Mahan and Greenberg finished impressive seasons and careers as members of the Bates Men's Squash team.
