Men's squash finishes fourth at NESCAC Championships

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Bates men's squash team fell by a 6-3 score to third-seeded Middlebury in the third-place match of the sixth NESCAC Squash Championships on Sunday at Trinity College. It's the second year in a row that the Panthers have beaten the Bobcats by a 6-3 score for third place in the conference, although last year the seeds were flipped, with Middlebury fourth and Bates seeded third.

Senior captain Bobby Burns (Greenwich, Conn.) anchored the Bobcats with a 3-0 (11-4, 13-11, 11-5) win over Valentin Quan at the No. 1 position on the ladder, while first-years Nabil Saleem (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Jason Shrubb (Hamilton, Bermuda) also won at the bottom of the ladder, at positions 8 and 9. Saleem came back from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 to defeat Reed Palmer, while Shrubb outlasted Robert Galluccio in the third set, 15-13, to earn a 3-0 sweep.

Coincidentally, Bates (11-13) is slated to play Middlebury (12-5) again in the Bobcats' next match, Feb. 11 at MIT.
