HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Bates men's squash team will face Middlebury on Sunday for third place in the conference, following Saturday's quarterfinal win over Bowdoin and semifinal loss to Trinity.

Bates defeated Bowdoin 5-4 in the quarterfinals on Saturday morning, defeating their archrivals for a 21st straight time and for the second straight year in the quarterfinal round. Senior captain Bobby Burns (Greenwich, Conn.) defeated Andrew Hilboldt 3-1 at the No. 1 spot on the ladder; also winning for the Bobcats (11-12) were junior Eric Bedell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) at No. 4, first-year Andy Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) at No. 5, junior Walter Cabot (Dover, Mass.) at No. 6 and first-year Nabil Saleem (Alpharetta, Ga.) at No. 8. Bowdoin dropped to 10-13.

Perennial national champion Trinity (15-1) ended Bates' streak of eight straight victories by a 9-0 score in the semis. The Bantams will seek a sixth conference title in the NESCAC tournament's six-year history tomorrow against Williams. Saleem scored the Bobcats' one set win at No. 7 against Juan Diego Lopez before falling 3-1 (10-12, 11-6, 11-5, 11-5).
