Abdel Khalek wins for men's squash at No. 2 Trinity

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The most legendary program in college squash, the No. 2 nationally ranked Trinity men, did what was expected and defeated No. 14 Bates on Saturday, but for the second time in the past four seasons, Bates earned an all-important point at the top of the lineup.

Bates first-year Ahmed Abdel Khalek (Cairo, Egypt) prevailed over Trinity's Juan Vargas in five sets, 8-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-6, to keep Bates (6-3, 1-1 NESCAC) from being shut out by the mighty Bantams (6-0, 3-0). Abdel Khalek raised his individual record to 5-1 in a match reminiscent of Kush Mahan's five-set victory over Trinity's Supreet Singh on Nov. 22, 2009 in Lewiston.

Sophomore Andy Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) also won a set for Bates and nearly tied his match up at 2-2 in his 3-1 (9-11, 11-5, 11-6, 13-11) loss to Vrishab Kotian at the No. 5 position. Bates played strong elsewhere up and down the lineup, most notably junior Kristian Muldoon's (Paget, Bermuda) 16-14, 11-3, 11-7 loss to Reinhold Hergeth at No. 2.

Bates stays on the road to play another NESCAC match at No. 12 Williams on Sunday at 1pm.
