LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates senior R.J. Keating was named the Harrow Sports Player of the Men’s National Team Championship for Hoehn Cup (B Division) play on Wednesday.
Keating (Short Hills, N.J.) went 3-0 individually, all in five-game matches, as the Bobcats went 2-1 at the tournament on Feb. 22-24 to finish with a final national rankings of No. 13 -- two better than what they entered the tourney with. The win over Greaves-Tunnell avenged a 3-1 defeat to the Eph rival on Feb. 2 and a 3-2 defeat on Jan. 13.
As the College Squash Association website described Keating's feat, "Keating, a senior, went 3 for 3 in his final matches of his collegiate career. Each of his victories at the #4 position were vitally important to the Bobcats. Despite Bates’ team loss, Keating defeated Alexander Greaves-Tunnell (Williams) in 5 games (11-5, 8-11, 3-11, 12-10, and 11-9). Against Navy, Keating faced Hunter Bouchard. The two faced-off with the two teams tied at 4-4. Keating recorded a 4-game victory (11-8, 11-6, 9-11, and 11-5) to propel Bates into the consolation finals. Against Penn, Keating defeated August Frank (4-11, 11-5, 8-11, 11-5, and 11-8) to solidify the Bobcat victory.
A four-year constant in Bates' starting lineup, Keating finished the 2012-13 season with a 14-10 individual record while playing mostly at the No. 4 spot, along with cameos at 1, 2 and 3.
