Men's squash beats Middlebury for 3rd place at NESCACs

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Meeting Middlebury in the Third Place Match of the NESCAC Men's Squash Championships for the third straight year, the Bates men's squash team trounced the Panthers 7-2 on Sunday at Trinity College, avenging losses in the same match in 2011 and 2012.

The Bobcats (12-9) have won five of their past seven matches, and next will play at Colby on Wednesday at 6pm in their final team match before the College Squash Association Team Nationals Feb. 22-24.

Bates first-year Ahmed Abdel Khalek (Cairo, Egypt) led a Bates sweep of the top three positions with his 3-0 victory over Jay Dolan at No. 1. Junior Kristian Muldoon (Paget, Bermuda) and senior captain Walter Cabot (Reading, Mass.) took care Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, defeating Parker Hurst and Spencer Hurst each by 3-1 scores.

Sophomore Andy Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) and first-year Filip Michalsky (Prague, Czech Republic) scored 3-0 wins at Nos. 5 and 7, respectively. First-year Caran Arora (Mumbai, India) won in four games at No. 8, and sophomore Nabil Saleem (Alpharetta, Ga.) won the lengthiest match of the first nine spots, coming back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Harrison Croll 3-2 at No. 6. In the exhibition match, senior David Born (Westbrook, Maine) staged a massive comeback from 2-0 down to win 3-2, beginning with an 18-16 win in the third game.
