Men's squash scores 5-4 upset win at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Bates men's squash team took a 2-1 record in the opening weekend of the 2012-13 season in three well-contested matches, following the Bobcats' big 5-4 win over Navy at the U.S. Naval Academy on Sunday. On Saturday at George Washington University, Bates defeated the host Colonials 5-4 before falling 5-4 to the University of Pennsylvania.

Bates first-year Ahmed Abdel Khalek (Cairo, Egypt) and sophomore Andy Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) both went 3-0 individually to lead the Bobcats, who are ranked No. 15 in the College Squash Association's preseason rankings. George Washington is currently ranked No. 16, while Navy is No. 13 and Penn is No. 9.

Abdel Khalek, the 2011 U.S. Junior Open champion, assumed the No. 1 position on the ladder and defeated GW's Islam El-Fiky, Penn's Danny Greenberg and Navy's James Kacergis, all by 3-0 counts in an impressive collegiate debut.

Senior R.J. Keating (Short Hills, N.J.), first-year Filip Michalsky (Prague, Czech Republic) and sophomore Nabil Saleem (Alpharetta, Ga.) helped defeat the Midshipmen at positions 3, 6 and 8, respectively, including five-set marathons for both Michalsky and Saleem.

Bates will next face NESCAC foe Tufts on Nov. 30 at Harvard.
