LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College first-year Amrit Rupasinghe won two matches to advance to the semifinals of the A Flight Singles on the first day of the Wallach Men's Tennis Invitational Saturday at the Wallach Tennis Center.

Also still alive to play Sunday for the Bobcats are junior Danilo Acosta (Quito, Ecuador) in C Flight Singles, first-year Zach Fenno (Armonk, N.Y.) in D Flight Singles, the doubles teams of senior Greg Little (Hampton, N.H.) with first-year Max Berger (Concord, N.H.) and sophomore Ben Stein with Rupasinghe in A Flight Doubles; and the doubles team of sophomore Mike Sherman (Huntington, N.Y.) and first-year Adam Nielson (Den Haag, The Netherlands) in B Flight Doubles.

Rupasinghe (Colombo, Sri Lanka) defeated Colby's Zach Schuman 6-3, 6-1 and edged Vassar's Erik Skartvedt 6-7 (4), 6-1, (14-12) on Saturday. He will face Bowdoin's Alex Caughron in the A Singles semifinals on Sunday.

Acosta beat Colby's Griffin Richards and Vassar's Jeremy Rosen in C Singles, and will meet Bowdoin's Adam Davis in the semifinals Sunday.

Fenno defeated Atul Soni of Brandeis and Brian Wilner of Tufts in D Singles. He'll meet Amherst's Ben Krause in Sunday's semifinals.

Little and Berger ousted Southern Maine's Craig Spann and Chris Chaffee, then dispatched Amherst's Zach Lerner and Karti Subramanian in A Doubles, while Stein and Rupasinghe beat Tufts' Jon Trott and Daniel Landers, then Vassar's Ashish Patel and Mike Mattleson. The two Bates pairs will face off against one another in the semifinals Sunday.

In B Doubles, Sherman and Nielson defeated Tufts' Vinh Tran and Andrew Rosen, then defeated Bowdoin's Tyler Anderson and Armin Drake, advancing to play Brandeis' Soni and Scott Schulman Sunday.
