WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Bates College men's tennis players Amrit Rupasinghe and Matt Bettles each won two matches to advance to the Round of 16 in the singles championship at the ITA Men's New England Championships.
The two Bobcats paired up as second-seeded doubles team in the field of 32 in the doubles championship and won their first- and second-round matches against teams from Clark and Williams, before being eliminated with an 8-2 loss to the Ephs' Petrie/Chaplin duo. In the same bracket, Bates senior Max Berger (Concord, N.H.) and sophomore Jeff Beaton (Haverhill, Mass.) also advanced to the bracket quarterfinals, defeating teams from Trinity and the seeded Lebedoff/Chow team from Williams, before bowing out against fourth-seeded Thomson/Lee of Middlebury.
Rupasinghe (Colombo, Sri Lanka), seeded eighth in the singles field, received a first-round bye then defeated Middlebury's Spencer Lunghino 6-2, 6-0, but bowed out to Williams' Felix Sun in the round of 16. Bettles (Taunton, England), one of the players seeded between 9-16 in the field, rolled past Williams' Trey Meyer 6-0, 6-2 in the first round, then outlasted Nick White of Brandeis 7-6(3), 6-4, then was eliminated by Middlebury's Andrew Lee.
Senior Mike Reiss (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) defeated Nicholas Fenichell of Bowdoin 6-3, 6-3, then fell in three sets to top-seeded Nick Lebedoff of Williams, 6-3, 0-6, 6-4. Moving on to the consolation bracket, Reiss won two more matches on Saturday, defeating Alex Kim of Amherst 7-6(5), 6-4 and Amherst's Robby Sorrell in a marathon, 6-7(5), 6-1, 10-8, moving into the semifinal round.
