HADLEY, Mass. -- The Bates College men's tennis team received the sixth seed in this weekend's NESCAC Men's Tennis Championship, and will play third-seeded Williams in the first round of the tournament on Friday at Amherst College.
The winner of the match will play No. 2 seed Amherst in Saturday's NESCAC semifinals. No. 5 Trinity and No. 4 Bowdoin face off in the other first-round match on Friday, with the winner to play top-seeded Middlebury in the conference semifinals on Saturday.
Bates (11-6, 5-4 NESCAC) and Williams (9-5, 6-2 NESCAC) have not met this season, but it will be a rematch from last year's first round of NESCACs, when the Ephs prevailed 5-1, winning two out of three doubles matches before clinching the decision with three straight singles victories.
No other team has more NESCAC men’s tennis titles than the Ephs (14), who won 11 straight from 1993 to 2003. Bates, meanwhile, is one of five teams in this year’s tournament field with a championship to its credit, the lone title coming in 1988.
Bates is 4-2 over its last six matches, most recently falling to Bowdoin, 7-2 on April 30, and earning a 6-3 decision over Tufts on May 2. Williams had a five-match winning streak snapped with Sunday’s 8-1 loss to Middlebury.
