WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Bates sophomore Matt Bettles defeated the top seed in the singles semifinals of the USTA/ITA New England Division III Men's Tennis Championships on Sunday at Williams College, before bowing out in the finals to Felix Sun of Williams.
Bettles (Taunton, England), the sixth seed in the tournament, defeated top-seeded Andy Peters of Middlebury in the semifinals on Sunday morning by a 7-5, 7-6(2). It was his third victory against a seeded opponent in the tournament, including one over the top seed and another against the No. 3 seed, Mark Kahan of Amherst.
Bettles, who made it as far as the Round of 16 in the same tournament a year ago, met Sun in the finals, where the Ephs sophomore prevailed by a score of 6-2, 6-3.
Matt Bettles won two more matches on Saturday to advance to the singles semifinals Saturday at the USTA/ITA Division III New England Men's Tennis Championships, held at Williams College.
Bettles (Taunton, England), the sixth seed in the tournament, defeated Bryan Chow of Williams, a second-tier seed, in the Round of 16 by a 6-1, 6-3 score, then went on to beat third-seeded Mark Kahan of Amherst in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
Bettles nearly met first-year teammate Tim Berg (Bradenton, Fla.) in tomorrow's semifinal. Berg defeated Middlebury's Chris Schlabach 6-4, 6-4 in the Round of 16 on Saturday, then faced Peters in the quarterfinals, where Peters prevailed in a second-set tiebreaker, 6-2, 7-6 (8).
Sophomore teammate Robert Crampton (Wilton, Conn.) finished his run in the singles bracket with a Round of 16 loss to No. 5 seed Luis Rattenhuber of Amherst.
The second-tier seeded (5-8) doubles pairing of Berg and Bettles played No. 3 seeds Mark Kahan and Luis Rattenhuber of Amherst and bowed out, 8-2, in Saturday's quarterfinal round.
Bettles, Crampton and Berg all advanced to the Round of 16 of singles play on Friday. Bettles, seeded sixth overall, received a first-round bye before defeating Freddy Rozenshteyn of Brandeis, 6-2, 6-2. The unseeded Berg outlasted Amherst's Robby Sorrel 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-3, in the first round, then dominated eighth-seeded Nick White of Brandeis, 6-0, 6-1. Crampton, meanwhile, among second-tier seeds 9 through 16, got past Alec Parower of Middlebury 6-2, 7-6(4) before eliminating Curtis Wu of MIT by a 6-1, 6-4 score.
Berg and Bettles also teamed up for two wins in doubles play to advance to the quarterfinals. The Bates duo defated Paul Kohnstamm and Pat Monaghan of Tufts 8-3, then rolled past Diego Angel and Harris Rollinger of Clark 8-5.
