MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Sophomores Matt Bettles and Robert Crampton both advanced to the semifinals of the Singles "A" Flight to headline the Bates College men's tennis team's successes at the fall season-opening Middlebury Invitational.
Bettles (Taunton, England) won a pair of matches in the Singles "A" Flight before bowing out in the flight semifinals to the eventual champion, Andy Peters of Middlebury. Bettles defeated Freddy Rozenshteyn of Brandeis 6-2, 7-5 in the first round, and went on to coast past Middlebury's David Farah 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
Crampton (Wilton, Conn.) outlasted Middlebury's Derrick Angle in the first round of A Singles in a super tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-3 (10-7), then prevailed over Nick White of Brandeis, the second seed in the flight, in another super tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-4 (10-6). He faced Trinity's Rich Bonfiglio in the semifinals but retired during the first set.
First-year Ben Bogard (Lido Beach, N.Y.) won three straight matches at D Singles to reach the flight championship match, where Middlebury's Mike Malhame prevailed in a second-set tie-breaker, 6-2, 7-6 (4). Bogard's victims included Griffin Reid of Ithaca, Will Oberrender of Middlebury and Pat Knise of Middlebury.
Two Bates doubles pairs in the Doubes "B" Flight both won first-round matches before bowing out in the quarterfinals. First-year Peter Yanofsky (Belmont, Mass.) and senior Sam Woods (Cambridge, N.Y.) beat Trinity's Boguslansky/Kemp duo 8-5. Bogard and first-year Eric Ruta (Ridgewood, N.J.) defeated Skidmore's Knight/Steerman pairing 8-4.
At B Singles, first-year Timmy Berg (Bradenton, Fla.) prevailed over Skidmore's Jimmy Sherpa in the first round, 2-1 (ret.).
