Bettles, Berg, Reffe claim flight titles in Wallach Invitational







LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates junior Matt Bettles won the A Singles Flight championship as well as the A Doubles title with sophomore Timmy Berg, as the Bates men's tennis team claimed three out of six flight titles at the annual two-day Wallach Men's Tennis Invitational.

Bettles (Taunton, England) beat Oliver Loutsenko of Skidmore 2-6, 7-6(4), 10-7, to capture the Wallach A Singles title, after defeating Chris Lord of Bowdoin 6-0, 5-7, 10-2 in the flight semifinals. Loutsenko had defeated Bettles' teammate Berg in the semifinals in yet another marathon match, 3-6, 7-5 (10-8).

Bettles and Berg (Bradenton, Fla.) defeated Amherst's Alex Kim and Justin Hendrix in the A Doubles semifinals on Sunday morning, 8-4, then outlasted second seeds Alec Hoblitzell and Jimmy Sherpa by a 9-8 (13-11) score in the championship match.

Bates junior Dylan Reffe (Washington, D.C.) claimed the D Singles Flight championship, beating David Myers of Trinity, 5-7, 7-6(5) 10-6. Berg got past Will Rives of Amherst earlier in the day in the semifinal round by a 6-3, 6-4 score.

Bettles and Berg lived up to claiming the top two seeds in the A Singles Flight of the annual Wallach Men's Tennis Invitational, as both players advanced to Sunday's flight semifinals on Saturday.

Bettles and Berg also made the Doubles A Flight semifinals, on the strength of their 8-1 defeat of Trinity's Ned Mandel and Dill Ayres in the flight quarterfinals. They are the top seeds in that flight as well.

Bates also has a semifinalist pair in the B Doubles Flight: senior captain Jeff Beaton (Haverhill, Mass.) and sophomore Peter Yanofsky (Belmont, Mass.), seeded second, edged Daniel Keolosy and Sam Sperling of Amherst by a 9-8(3) score.

In D Singles, Reffe and sophomore Ben Bogard (Lido Beach, N.Y.) both advanced to the semifinals. Reffe defeated George Wheatley of Trinity 6-3, 6-3, while Bogard notched a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Skidmore's Max Bevan, folloewd by a 6-2, 6-4 win over Mike DeFeo of Brandeis. First-year Henry Lee (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) also won a match in D Singles, defeating Gabe Steerman of Skidmore 6-1, 5-7 (10-3) in the Round of 16.
