Men's tennis wins 7-2 at 16th-ranked Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Bates College men's tennis team captured its third win in a row with a 7-2 upset win at No. 16 nationally ranked University of Mary Washington on Saturday.

The 29th-ranked Bobcats (3-4) won all three doubles matches for the third straight time to take early control of the match, then took four out of six singles matches to seal the win in impressive fashion.

Bates controlled all three doubles matches. Its No. 1 duo, juniors Matt Bettles (Taunton, England) and Rob Crampton (Wilton, Conn.), won 8-3, and at No. 2 sophomore Timmy Berg (Bradenton, Fla.) and first-year Pierre Planche (Natick, Mass.) coasted to an 8-2 win.

All four of the Bobcats' singles wins were achieved in straight sets, with Berg at No. 1, Bettles at No. 2, Crampton at No. 3 and Planche at No. 5. The final score could almost have been 8-1 in Bates' favor, but junior Kyle DeSisto (Cohasset, Mass.) came on out the short end of a back-and-forth battle at No. 6 singles with Riley Baver.

UMW dropped to 4-10 with its sixth straight loss.

Bates finishes its three-day southern swing with a 10am match at Johns Hopkins on Sunday.
