Bettles and Planche win A Doubles flight at Wallach

LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates senior Matt Bettles (Taunton, England) and sophomore Pierre Planche (Natick, Mass.) played as doubles partners for the first time this weekend at the annual Wallach Men's Tennis Invitational. So far, so good.

With the other half of his All-America doubles team, senior Rob Crampton (Wilton, Conn.), out with an injury, Bettles teamed up to win the A Doubles Flight championship match on Sunday by an 8-2 score over Alec Siegel and Mitch Krems of Brandeis. To reach the final, Bettles and Planche defeated Trinity's Mandell/Traft duo 8-1, Ottomano/Martin of Colby 8-4, and Grindon Bragg of Bowdoin 8-6 in the semifinals.

Bettles competed in the A Singles Flight as the top seed, and was upset in the second round by Jugal Marfatia of Trinity 6-3, 2-6, (10-5). Bettles defeated Danny Knight of Skidmore 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 in the first round.

Planche also played in the A Singles flight, falling in the first round to eventual flight finalist Carlos de Bracamonte of Amherst.

Other Bates action in the tournament included:

  • Senior Dylan Reffe (Washington, D.C.) and sophomore Henry Lee's (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) reaching the quarterfinals of the B Doubles flight, with an 8-6 win over Westerfield/Tan of Tufts followed by an 8-4 victory over Steerman/Ransom of Skidmore.
  • Junior Peter Yanofsky (Belmont, Mass.) went 1-1 in the B Singles Flight, including a 6-3, 6-4 win over Krems of Brandeis.
  • Junior Eric Ruta (Ridgewood, N.J.) went 1-1 in C Singles, with a 4-6, 6-2, (11-9) win over Ben Fine of Brandeis.
  • First-year Cosmin Bardan (Bacau, Romania) went 2-1 in D Singles, with a 3-6, 7-6 (4), (13-11) marathon win over Mark Mantikas of Colby, followed by a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kyle Boguslawski of Trinity.

Fourth-seeded Casey Gindon of Bowdoin defeated unseeded Carlos de Bracamonte of Amherst College to win the A Singles Flight. Following are the results of today's six flight championship matches in the annual tournament, played at Wallach Tennis Center and in Merrill Gymnasium at Bates College.
