CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The No. 15 nationally ranked Bates men's tennis team posted an impressive 6-3 victory Thursday night at Pomona-Pitzer, winning two-thirds of both doubles and singles play.
Two-time All-Americans Matt Bettles (Taunton, England) and Rob Crampton (Wilton, Conn.) outfought the Sagehens' Max Sabel and Frankie Allinson 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, while junior Timmy Berg (Bradenton, Fla.) and sophomore Pierre Planche (Natick, Mass.) put away Chris Wiechert and Kevin Wei 8-4 at second doubles, putting Bates ahead 2-1 going into singles play.
Planche won in two sets at No. 4 singles, including a first-set tiebreaker, to claim Bates' first point in singles play. Next, Bettles dealt Sabel a 6-2, 6-4 defeat, and Berg also prevailed in three sets at third singles over Connor Hudson to clinch Bates' win. Crampton outlasted Wiechert in a third-set super-tiebreaker at No. 1 singles, overcoming a 6-1 loss in the opening set to win and gain the Bobcats' sixth point of the night.
It was the season-opening match for the host Sagehens (0-1). The Bobcats (2-1) play at No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday at 10am PST to finish up their trip to California.
