No. 5 Ephs grind out tough match vs. men's tennis

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Bates sophomore Pierre Planche continued his exceptional sophomore season with a three-set win at No. 4 singles, for the No. 21 nationally ranked Bates men's tennis team's lone point in an 8-1 loss at No. 5 Williams on Thursday.

Planche (Natick, Mass.) rose to 9-2 this year in singles matches with his 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 victory over Zach Weiss, highlighting a competitive effort by the Bobcats.

Bates (5-7, 2-3 NESCAC) fell narrowly at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, allowing the Ephs (12-3, 4-1) to enter singles play with a 3-0 lead. Senior All-American duo Matt Bettles (Taunton, England) and Rob Crampton (Wilton, Conn.) fell in a pro-set tiebreaker, 9-8 (7) to Alex Schidlovsky and Trey Meyer. At No. 2, Planche and junior Timmy Berg (Bradenton, Fla.) pushed Williams' Matt Micheli and Felix Sun to a 9-7 decision.

In other singles play highlights, Berg and his No. 3 singles opponent, Micheli, battled through a 12-10 second-set tiebreaker and third-set super tiebreaker, with Micheli prevailing 6-3, 6-7 (10), 11-9. Crampton traded 6-1 set wins at No. 1 with Meyer before the Eph prevailed 6-1, 1-6, 6-2.
