FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – No. 25 Bates College men's tennis concluded its three-match swing in Virginia with an 8-1 win over North Carolina Wesleyan College on Sunday afternoon at the Battleground Athletic Complex on the campus of the University of Mary Washington.
The Bobcats (4-6) swept the three doubles matches and took five of six singles matches from the Battling Bishops (7-4).
The first doubles duo of senior Timmy Berg (Bradenton, Fla.) and junior Pierre Planche (Natick, Mass.) captured an 8-3 victory, senior Ben Bogard (Lido Beach, N.Y.) and first-year Patrick Ordway (Falmouth, Maine) pulled out a 9-8 (5) win at second doubles, and the pair of senior Eric Ruta (Ridgewood, N.J.) and first-year Christopher Ellis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) snagged an 8-4 win on court No. 3.
Berg, Planche, and Ellis followed their doubles victories with wins on singles court Nos. 1, 2, and 3 respectively. Berg won 6-3, 6-3, Planche went 6-1, 6-1, and Ellis finished 6-2, 6-3.
Junior Henry Lee (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win on singles court No. 5, and Ordway seized a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 6 singles spot.
Next, Bates hosts Amherst on April 12 at 11 a.m.
