Men's tennis nearly upsets No. 5 Williams
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Bates College men's tennis almost picked five points, but No. 5 nationally-ranked Williams College avoided the upset with a 6-3 win at the Chapman Rink Indoor Tennis Courts on Thursday evening.
The Bobcats (5-8, 2-3 NESCAC) nearly took two points in doubles play, but with a 2-1 lead after that round, the Ephs (11-3, 4-1 NESCAC) captured four of six singles matches to earn the win.
The first doubles duo of senior Timmy Berg (Bradenton, Fla.) and junior Pierre Planche (Natick, Mass.) snagged an 8-5 win while the senior tandem of Ben Bogard (Lido Beach, N.Y.) and Peter Yanofsky (Belmont, Mass.) absorbed a 9-8 (4) loss at second doubles.
Planche claimed a 6-2, 6-0 win at second singles, and junior Henry Lee (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) posted a 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 victory at fourth singles.
Berg pushed Williams' Matt Micheli to three sets at first singles, and first-year Brent Feldman (Waccabuc, N.Y.) almost sent his match to a third set before falling 6-0, 7-5.
Next, Bates plays at Brandies on Saturday at 10 a.m.
