INDIANAPOLIS – Bates College senior Timmy Berg and junior Pierre Planche have qualified as one of 16 doubles teams for the doubles competition at the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships from May 22-24 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, Calif.
The selection marks the first time that either Berg or Planche will compete at the NCAA Championships. As a duo, the pair tallied a 13-4 record during the 2013-14 season, all at the No. 1 position.
The two defeated nationally-ranked opponents on each of two occasions this year – an 8-6 win over then-No. 5 Emerson Walsh and Michael Buxbaum of Johns Hopkins on March 22 and an 8-2 victory over then-No. 23 David Konstantinov and Chris Schommer of Whittier on February 17.
As a team the Bobcats faced nine nationally-ranked opponents during the spring campaign, and Berg and Planched picked up doubles wins in six of those matches.
The selection of teams and individuals for the championships are based on win-lost record, strength of schedule, and eligibility and availability of student-athletes.
Claremont-McKenna-Harvey Mudd-Scripps Colleges will serve as the event's host.
The Biszantz Family Tennis Center is a 12 court tennis facility with permanent seating for 2,500 spectators, state of the art lighting on each court, a team room, kitchen area and locker rooms. The Biszantz Family Tennis Center won the USTA's Outstanding Facility of the Year award in 2010. Claremont McKenna-Harvey Mudd-Scripps Colleges have hosted the NCAA Division III National Championship five (5) times.
