Men's tennis scores 8-1 NESCAC victory at Hamilton

CLINTON, N.Y. -- The No. 26 nationally ranked Bates men's tennis team picked up its first victory of the season on Sunday with an 8-1 NESCAC win at Hamilton.

Bates (1-4, 1-1 NESCAC) swept all six singles matches after taking two out of three in doubles play.

Hamilton dropped to 2-3 overall, 0-2 in the NESCAC.

Senior Chris Ellis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and junior Ben Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) teamed up for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles against Eyad Nagori and Lars Scannell, while senior Josh Leiner (Baltimore, Md.) and sophomore Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) won for the second straight day at No. 3 doubles, 8-3 over Devin White and Jon Cohen. The Continentals scored their lone point of the day at second doubles, with McKee Proctor and Sam Farber topping senior Pat Ordway (Falmouth, Maine) and first-year Jacob Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo.) 8-5.

Rosen withstood a challenge from Proctor in the first set of the No. 1 singles match but posted a 7-5, 6-0 victory. Ellis defeated Farber 6-1, 6-3 at second singles; Quijano won at third singles 6-3, 6-1 over Nagori; Kauppila downed Cohen 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4; first-year Vidyut Yadav (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) defeated Burke Paxton 6-2, 6-3 at fifth singles; and Leiner swept Scannell 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles.

Bates next plays at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va., on Friday, March 24. The Bobcats will face Johns Hopkins the following day at Mary Washington before playing at Georgetown University on March 26.
