Gauthier qualifies for nationals; Bobcats 2nd at Colby meet

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Bates College senior Noah Gauthier (Amherst, N.H.) hit the automatic qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships while he claimed first place in the hammer throw, as the Bobcat men's track and field team finished second out of four teams at the Colby Invitational on Saturday.

With 171 points, Bates was the runner-up to MIT (224) while topping the University of Southern Maine (156) and Colby (106).

Gauthier, the recently crowned NCAA Division III indoor weight throw champion, launched a top hammer throw of 58.30 meters for first place. Gauthier also placed second in the shot put (14.63) and fifth in the discus (37.24).

Other standout performances for the Bobcats included:

  • Sophomore Richard McNeil (Lawrence, Mass.) also had a big day in the throwing events, finishing second in both the discus (43.40) and hammer (52.76) while taking fourth place in the shot put (13.06).
  • Bates first-year Ryan Quinn (Watertown, Mass.) took first place in the 400 meters (51.00 seconds) and was the runner-up in the 200 (22.85),.
  • First-year Christopher Murtagh (Rowley, Mass.) won the javelin throw in 49.33 meters, while sophomore Connor Hogan (Stow, Mass.) was third (41.91);
  • Senior Emmanuel Drabo (Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso) finished second in the triple jump (13.47 meters) and fourth in the long jump (6.15);
  • Sophomore Doug Brecher (Waban, Mass.) and senior Matt Dunlap (Farmington, Maine) were second and third in the 5,000 meters in 15:17.67 and 15:22.11, respectively;
  • First-year Monthe Kofos (Marlborough, Mass.) was second in the 400 hurdles (1:00.45);
  • Sophomore Carlos Castro (Mexico City, Mexico) was fourth in the 400 (52.85 seconds) and fifth in the 200 (23.82);
  • Sophomore Peter Garber (Short Hills, N.J.) was fourth in the pole vault (3.90 meters);
  • First-years Brett Epler (Wellesley, Mass.) and Wesley Farnsworth (South Royalton, Vt.) were fourth and fifth in the high jump , both at 1.76 meters;
  • Sophomore Mark Liu (Lexington, Mass.) was fifth in the hammer throw (42.87), sixth in the discus (36.27) and sixth in the shot put (12.25);
  • Junior Michael Watson (Mansfield, Mass.) was fifth in the 1,500 meters (4:11.78).

Bates returns to Colby next Saturday, April 19 for the State of Maine Men's Championships, starting at 1 p.m.
