LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates Decathlon concluded in rainy weather on Monday afternoon at Bates College, with Bates sophomore Brett Epler coming in first place and entering Bates' all-time performance list at No. 4, with 5,688 points.

The event put Epler (Wellesley, Mass.) in competition with first-year teammate Ian Dulin (Bennington, Vt.) and Colby's David Lowe, in an effort to score enough points to qualify for championship meets later this season. Epler qualified for both the New England Division III Championships and the ECAC Division III Championships with his final score.

Lowe finished second with 5,537 points and Dulin was third with 3,925 points, after scoring the most points in his specialty event, the pole vault, with a personal best mark of 11-5.75.

Epler posted a personal record in the 110-meter high hurdles of 16.01 seconds, which moved him to No. 7 on Bates' all-time performance list in that event.

In Sunday's first five events, Epler scored 3,263 points, and exceeded his lifetime best in the long jump by more than a foot with a leap of 6.55 meters, moving him to No. 5 on Bates' all-time Top 10 performances list and qualifying him for the New England Division III Championships in that event. He also posted lifetime bests in the 100-meter dash (11.65 seconds) and the high jump (1.82 meters).
