Men's track and field competes at MIT, Valentine meets

BOSTON and CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Bates College men's track and field team participated in both the MIT Invitational and the Valentine Invitational at Boston University on Saturday, in preparation for next weekend's New England Division III Indoor Championships.

Among the highlights at MIT, first-year Mike Jiang (Madison, Conn.) won not only the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.50 seconds but the 55-meter dash as well, where he finished 1-2 with first-year teammate Nick Marinakis (Reading, Mass.) at 6.68 and 6.75 seconds.

First-year Doug Kempner (Burlington, Vt.) won the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:27.01

Senior Jerome Bennett (Chicago, Ill.) placed second in the pole vault with a top effort of 14-02.75, with first-year Sam Goldstein (Memphis, Tenn.) placing sixth with the same top mark, while junior Naoki Kakuta (Osaka, Japan) placed second in the 1,000 with a time of 2:41.06

At the all-divisions Valentine Invitational at Boston University, a number of Bobcats ran fast times. Sophomore Tom Esponnette (Auburn, Maine) ran the mile in 4:19.18, good for 56th place out of 182 competitors and putting him at No. 9 on Bates' all-time performance list. Sophomore Devin Dilts (Roscoe, Ill.) ran the 5,000 meters in 15:14.68, good for 37th place out of 95 competitors and qualifying him for New Englands. Junior Doug Brecher (Waban, Mass.), who had already qualified for New Englands in the 5,000, was 38th in 15:15.25. Senior Mike Watson (Mansfield, Mass.) qualified for New Englands in the 1,000 with a time of 2:35.80, good for 58th place. And sophomore Peter Gurney (Arlington, Va.) ran a personal-best time of 8:54.41 in the 3,000, qualifying him for New Englands.

On Friday night, the distance medley relay team of senior C.J. Murray (North Andover, Mass.), Watson, first-year Troy Calandra (San Francisco, Calif.) and Esponnette finished in 10:26.72, good for 17th place out of 22. The time ranks seventh on Bates' all-time performance list.
