LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's track and field team took first place in three events and finished third Saturday night at the 2009 Maine Intercollegiate Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships, held in Merrill Indoor Gymnasium.
Bates scored 132.5 points, behind Bowdoin (208.5) and Southern Maine (162) and ahead of Colby (18).
Bates sophomore Tom Esponnette (Auburn, Maine) won the mile run for the Bobcats with a time of 4:20.74. Junior Doug Brecher (Waban, Mass.) captured first place in the 5,000-meter run in 15:31.50, and junior Mark Liu (Lexington, Mass.) won the weight throw with a top heave of 51-05.50.
Prior to the meet, the throwing area in the recently refurbished Merrill facilities was named the Joseph Woodhead All-America Throwing Area, in honor of the Bobcats' assistant coach, who has mentored 15 Bates men and women to 39 All-America honors, and six NCAA titles. Many of Woodhead's former athletes attended a surprise celebration in Woodhead's honor.
The annual meet's 55-meter hurdles race was also named in honor of Al Harvie '65, a former track team captain and champion hurdler at Bates, who has been the public address announcer for 40 consecutive Maine Indoor Track and Field Championships.
