Relays, vaulters excel for men's track and field at ECACs









MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Bates College men's track and field team received a sixth-place performance in the 4x800 relay Saturday, highlighting the Bobcats' day at the ECAC Division III Indoor Championships at Tufts University.

Bates finished the meet with 11.50 points, placing 29th out of 50 scoring teams.

The 4x800 relay team of first-year Troy Calandra (San Francisco, Calif.), sophomore Joe Musso (Wallingford, Conn.), senior Mike Watson (Mansfield, Mass.) and first-year Peter Corcoran (Stillwater, Minn.) finished in 8:03.56 to add three points to the Bobcats' tally.

Also scoring points for Bates on Saturday were sophomore Tom Esponnette (Auburn, Maine), who finished eighth in the mile (4:22.89), and junior Mark Liu (Lexington, Mass.), who placed eighth in the weight throw (50-08.25).

Junior Doug Brecher (Waban, Mass.) was 12th in the 3,000 (8:48.59).

On Friday, the ECACs got off to a strong start for the Bobcats. Both senior Jerome Bennett (Chicago, Ill.) and first-year Sam Goldstein (Memphis, Tenn.) notched personal-record heights of 14 feet and 11 inches in the pole vault, moving them into a tie at No. 3 on Bates' all-time performance list. Bennett finished fifth in the event and Goldstein tied for eighth.

The distance medley relay team narrowly missed meeting the provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Championships, with a time of 10:12.29, their fastest time of the season. Mike Watson ran a 3:09 leadoff leg in the 1,200, followed by sophomore Ryan Quinn's (Watertown, Mass.) 49.6-second split in the 400, Peter Corcoran's 1:57.7 split in the 800 and Tom Esponnette's anchor mile time of 4:14.8.
