GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Bates senior Rich McNeil competed in the shot put on Saturday to wrap up the Bates men's track and field team's excursion to the NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships at DePauw University. Unfortunately McNeil fouled on all three of his attempts in the preliminary flights and was among seven competitors who missed the finals. He entered the competition as the 16th seed.
The Bates College men's track and field team was represented on Friday at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships by McNeil in the weight throw and first-year Jesse Chapman in the pentathlon.
McNeil (Lawrence, Mass.) missed the finals in the weight throw and finished 11th overall with a top effort of 57-07.50, one place better than his No. 12 seeding entering the event.
Earlier on Friday, Chapman (East Thetford, Vt.) scored 3,325 points in the pentathlon to finish 12th out of 13 competitors, 30 points behind 11th-place Richard Roethel of Christopher Newport University and 171 points under his Bates record-setting performance last week at the ECAC Division III Championships. Chapman led all competitors in the shot put at 43-8, good for 686 of his points.
