DEDHAM, Mass. -- A year after breaking the team's 79-year-old record in the 4x800-meter relay, the Bates College men's track and field team set a new mark on Saturday at the all-divisions Open New England outdoor championships, hosted by Northeastern University.

Bates finished the meet with 21 team points, good for 15th place out of 39 scoring teams and sixth among Division III teams.

The Bates quartet of sophomore Troy Calandra (San Francisco, Calif.), sophomore Peter Corcoran (Stillwater, Minn.), first-year Nick Barron (Kirkwood, Mo.) and first-year James LePage (Cumberland, Maine) finished second only to UMass-Amherst in the 4x800 in a time of 7:41.87, shattering the mark of 7:44.08 set a year ago at Open New Englands by Calandra, Mike Watson '09, C.J. Murray '09 and Corcoran. The time is believed to be the fastest run by any Division III team this season.
