Men's track and field second in indoor meet at MIT









CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Bates College men's indoor track and field team started the 2010 season off in good form, with five event wins contributing to a second-place showing in a tri-meet against MIT and Colby on Saturday. Bates had 125.50 points, behind MIT (223.50) and ahead of Colby (29).

Senior two-time All-American Rich McNeil (Lawrence, Mass.) got off to a fine start for the indoor season by taking first place in the weight throw (53-07.75) and the shot put (48-09.50). Both marks qualified him to compete in the New England Division III Championships (to be held at Bates Feb. 19-20), as well as the ECAC Division III Championships.

Junior Tom Esponnette (Auburn, Maine) won the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:35.84, qualifying him for New Englands.

Junior Brett Epler (Wellesley, Mass.) won the high jump with a top leap of 5-11.25.

Sophomore Sam Goldstein (Memphis, Tenn.) won the pole vault with a top vault of 14-05.25, qualifying for both New Englands and ECACs, while senior Jerome Bennett (Chicago, Ill.) came in third at 13-10.50.

Other highlights for Bates included:

  • First-year Anthony Haeuser (South Portland, Maine) finished second in the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.10 seconds, placing him sixth on Bates' all-time performance list and qualifying him for New Englands.
  • First-year James LePage (Cumberland, Maine) placed second in the 800 (1:58.85), qualifying for New Englands;
  • Junior Chris Murtagh (Rowley, Mass.) placed second in the weight throw (51-02.25);
  • Junior Devin Dilts (Roscoe, Ill.) placed second in the 5,000 meters in 15:41.39, while sophomore Sean Colligan (Goffstown, N.H.) came in third in 16:18.05.
  • First-year Andrew Wortham (Newton, Mass.) placed third in the 3,000 meters, at 8:56.93, qualifying him for New Englands. Senior Doug Brecher (Waban, Mass.) was right behind in fourth (8:57.72).
  • First-year Jesse Chapman (East Thetford, Vt.) placed third in the long jump (19-08.00).
  • Junior Ethan Waldman (Playa del Rey, Calif.) had career bests in the shot put (44-08.75, 5th) and weight throw (47-01.00), qualifying for New Englands in both events.
  • THe 4x400 relay team of senior Carlos Castro (Mexico City, Mexico), senior Steven Fukuda (East Hartford, Conn.), Epler and junior Ryan Quinn (Watertown, Mass.) finished second in 3:31.38.
  • The 4x800 relay team of first-year Nick Barron (Kirkwood, Mo.), sophomore Peter Corcoran (Stillwater, Minn.), Esponnette and senior Griffin Stabler (Keene, N.H.) took second place in 8:16.68.

Next weekend Bates hosts the University of Maine, Colby and Southern Maine in a four-team meet. The pentathlon takes place on Friday at 5 p.m., and the rest of the meet starts Saturday at 12 p.m.
