Men's track and field takes third place at NESCAC Championships

MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Bates College men's track and field team had another impressive NESCAC Track and Field Championships on Sunday, finishing a strong third out of 11 teams. Bates scored 129 points, behind only repeat champion Williams (167.50) and Tufts (155.50), and well ahead of the rest of the field, led by fourth-place Amherst (100).

Bates was the most dominant team in the throwing events, led by senior Rich McNeil's (Lawrence, Mass.) victories in the shot put (49-07.25) and the hammer throw (178-08). McNeil was also second in the discus throw (147-10).

First-year Jesse Chapman (East Thetford, Vt.) passed several athletes on his final discus throw, including second-place McNeil, to take first place at 149-09. Chapman also placed eighth in the shot put (43-10.00).

Junior Chris Murtagh (Rowley, Mass.) was second in the javelin throw (191-11), second in the hammer (178-04), third in the shot put (45-07.75) and fourth in the discus (144-07).

Other point-scoring performances for the Bobcats included:

  • Junior Ethan Waldman (Playa del Rey, Calif.) was second in the shot put (46-04.75) and eighth in the discus (134-03).
  • Senior Jerome Bennett (Chicago, Ill.) placed third in the high jump (6-03.25), as well as seventh in the pole vault (14-02.75).
  • Sophomore Sam Goldstein (Memphis, Tenn.) placed third in the pole vault (14-08.75).
  • Junior Ryan Quinn (Watertown, Mass.) was fourth in both the 100 and 200 for the second straight year. Quinn ran an 11.30 in the preliminaries of the 100, second best in the field of 21, then was at 11.40 in the final. Quinn finished the 200 in 22.79.
  • First-year David Pless (Atlanta, Ga.) was fifth in the hammer (157-10) and seventh in both the discus (136-00) and the shot put (44-02.75).
  • Sophomore Mike Jiang (Madison, Conn.) was third in the prelims in the 100 at 11.38 seconds, then placed fifth in the finals at 11.43.
  • Bates was also third in the 4x100 relay, in 43.31 seconds. The team comprised Jiang, Quinn, junior Pat Carroll (North Andover, Mass.) and first-year Tim Woods (Westfield, N.J.).
  • Junior Devin Dilts (Roscoe, Ill.) placed sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, at 9:42.08.
  • Sophomore Duncan Briggs (Arrowsic, Maine) was sixth in the javelin throw (173-08).
  • First-year Andrew Wortham (Newton, Mass.) placed eighth in the 5,000 at 15:19.54.
  • Junior Peter Gurney (Arlington, Va.) placed eighth in the 10,000, at 32:12.45.
  • Senior Nicolas DeFrancis (Norwich, Vt.) was eighth in the javelin throw (167-10).

Bates athletes who will garner NESCAC All-Conference awards for top-three performances include: McNeil (3), Murtagh (3), Chapman, Waldman, Bennett, Goldstein, and the 4x100 relay team (Jiang, Quinn, Carroll, Woods).

Bates competes at the New England Division III Championships next weekend, also at Tufts.
