Men's track and field tunes up for New Englands at BU, MIT

BOSTON -- The Bates College men's track and field team had athletes competing Saturday in both the all-divisions Valentine Invitational at Boston University and at the MIT Invitational, a non-scoring meet for Division III teams, in the final tuneups before hosting the New England Division III Indoor Championships next weekend.

At BU, senior Rich McNeil (Lawrence, Mass.) placed seventh overall in the weight throw at 58-01.75 and sixth in the shot put at 51-09.00, a lifetime best.

Other highlights included the 3,000-meter run, where senior Doug Brecher (Waban, Mass.) entered Bates' all-time top 10 performance list with a time of 8:41.68. Junior Peter Gurney (Arlington, Va.) also impressed in the 3K, finishing in 8:43.72.

In the 5K, first-year Eric Kimball (Manchester, Mass.) notched a time of 15:33.98, qualifying him for the New England Division III Championships.

Sophomore Mike Jiang (Madison, Conn.) qualified for New Englands in the 200, with a time of 23.25 seconds. Junior Ryan Quinn (Watertown, Mass.), already a qualifier, crossed the finish line in 22.95 seconds.

First-year James LePage (Cumberland, Maine) ran an impressive 2:32.89 in the 1,000, and sophomore Peter Corcoran (Stillwater, Minn.) ran a 1:57.96 in the 800.

On Friday at BU, the Bates men ran the distance medley relay. The Bobcats were seeded 18th out of 30 teams in a strong field, but they outdid that with a 16th-place showing, covering the race in a time of 10:17.00, the seventh best in team history. Corcoran led off with a 3:11 split in the 1,200-meter leg, followed by Quinn doing 48.7 seconds in the 400, LePage running a the 800 in 1:56.8 and first-year Nick Barron (Kirkwood, Mo.) anchoring with a season-best time of 4:19.9 in the mile.

At MIT, highlights for Bates included first-year Tony Haeuser (South Portland, Maine) finishing second in the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.08 seconds.

The 4x400 relay team of all first-year runners -- David Hardison (South Portland, Maine), Haeuser, Andrew Grant (Watertown, Mass.) and Elliot West (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) -- finished second out of six teams in an exciting race, at 3:36.70, .16 seconds behind Plattsburgh State.

Junior Chris Murtagh (Rowley, Mass.) was third in the weight throw, at 52-11.50, while senior Mark Liu was fourth in 51-01.75

First-year David Pless (Atlanta, Ga.) was fourth out of 45 in the shot put, at 44-08.00.

First-year Tim Woods (Westfield, N.J.) was fifth in the 200 at 24.62

Junior Brett Epler (Wellesley, Mass.) was fifth in the 600, at 1:28.01.

The Bobcats will host the New England Division III Indoor Championships this coming weekend in Merrill Indoor Gymnasium. The pentathlon takes place Friday, Feb. 19 at 12 p.m., while the rest of the meet starts Saturday at 11 a.m.
