Men's track and field earns three more NCAA qualifications

BOSTON -- Three members of the No. 9 nationally ranked Bates men's indoor track and field team met provisional qualification standards for the NCAA Division III Championships on Saturday at the BU Valentine Invitational, highlighting a busy day of two non-scoring meets for the team.

Bates sophomore Nick Barron (Kirkwood, Mo.) ran the mile in 4:13.38, second among all Division III runners at the meet. Barron's time is 1.42 seconds lower than the NCAA provo mark of 4:14.80.

First-years Noah Graboys (Glencoe, Ill.) and Tully Hannan (West Hartford, Conn.) both beat the provisional banked-track standard of 14:49.40 in the 5,000 meters. Graboys finished in 14:38.95, 15th out of 65 runners at the meet and first among Division III runners. Hannan was 21st in 14:48.33.

Also at BU, senior Chris Murtagh (Rowley, Mass.) improved upon his provisional qualification status in the weight throw. Murtagh's top heave of 61-03.00 exceeded by a quarter-inch his previous personal best, set on Jan. 29. Murtagh entered the weekend ranked fifth among all Division III athletes in the weight so far this season.

Other Bates highlights from BU included:

  • Senior Ryan Quinn (Watertown, Mass.) ran a 50.01-second 400, qualifying for the ECAC Division III Championships in three weeks. First-year Ben Levy (Belmont, Mass.) finished in a personal-best 50.40, qualifying for the New England Division III Championships next weekend.
  • The 4x400 relay team ran a fast time of 3:21.87, on the legs of Levy, first-year Jarret McKallagat (Berkeley Heights, N.J.), sophomore James LePage (Cumberland, Maine) and Quinn.

Other Bates team members competed at the Tufts Invitational nearby. The meet was highlighted by senior Elliot Foster (Coral Springs, Fla.) qualifying for the ECAC Division III Championships in three weeks in the weight throw, where he placed third with a personal-record toss of 52-00.50.

Other highlights from Tufts included:

  • First-year Patrick Jeffries (Oneonta, N.Y.) won the 600 in 1:28.94.
  • First-year Festus Yangani (Kaptagat, Kenya) took first place in the 800 at 2:07.87.
  • Sophomore Ken Whitney (West Hartford, Conn.) won the 5,000 in 15:48.20.
  • Sophomore Anthony Haeuser (South Portland, Maine) took first place in the 60-meter hurdles, at 8.69.
  • First-year Tyler Grees (Williamstown, Mass.) took second place in the high jump, at 5-11.25.

The New England Division III meet takes place at Springfield Feb. 18-19.
