Men's track and field wins seven events in MIT/Colby home meet







LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates men's track and field team opened the 2011 indoor season by hosting Colby and MIT in a tri-meet Saturday at Walter Slovenski Track. Perennial power MIT won the team scoring with 192 points, followed by Bates with 116 and Colby with 45.

Senior teammates Chris Murtagh (Rowley, Mass.) and Ethan Waldman (Playa del Rey, Calif.) copped first place for Bates in the two throwing events, with Murtagh throwing the weight a personal-best 18.60 meters, and Waldman winning the shot handily at 15.78 meters.

Other highlights for the Bobcats included:

  • first-year Noah Graboys' (Wilmette, Ill.) dominant win in the 3,000 meters, in 8:47.16;
  • first-year Ben Levy (Belmont, Mass.) took first place in the 400-meter dash, in 52.18 seconds.
  • first-year Jarret McKallagat (Atkinson, N.H.) and sophomore Tony Haeuser (South Portland, Maine) far outpaced the competition in the 55 hurdles, taking first and second places at 8.08 and 8.11 seconds, respectively.
  • sophomore James LePage (Cumberland, Maine) won the 1,000 in 2:35.06, followed in second by sophomore Nick Barron (Kirkwood, Mo.).
  • Bates won the distance medley relay, with senior Tom Esponnette (Auburn, Maine), senior Kevin McDonald (Stewart Manor, N.Y.), Barron and first-year Tully Hannan (West Hartford, Conn.) finishing in 10:39.46.

On Saturday (Jan. 22) Bates hosts the University of Maine, Colby and Southern Maine for a four-team meet starting at noon.
