NEW ORLEANS -- Bates sophomore David Pless was named New England Region Men's Field Athlete of the Year, and Bates coach Al Fereshetian was named New England Men's Coach of the Year, as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Monday the winners of regional awards for the 2011 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field season.
Sixteen male and sixteen female student-athletes earned awards as a track or field Athlete of the Year while 32 USTFCCCA members earned plaudits as a coach or assistant coach of either a men's or women's team.
Pless (Atlanta, Ga.) enters the national championships as the No. 1 seed in the shot put, having claimed a best mark of 58-10.25 (17.94m) to win the All-Division New England Championships. After winning the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships shot put title, Pless also claimed titles with the shot this outdoor season at the New England Division meet, the NESCAC Championships, and the State of Maine Championships. Last weekend Pless won the ECAC Division III title in both the shot put and the discus. Pless topped the NESCAC record in the shot by more than three feet, and is also qualified for the NCAA meet in the discus.
It is the second honor this season for Fereshetian, who was also named NESCAC Men's Track and Field Coach of the Year in early May. Fereshetian's Bobcats team is ranked 20th in the nation, the best of all New England Region teams. Bates earned a fifth-place finish at All-New Englands. Fereshetian coaches Bates throwers, of which six earned spots in the NCAA Championship meet (three in the shot put, one in the hammer and one in the discus). The team is ranked No. 3 in the region and No. 20 in the nation.
Pless and Fereshetian will participate in the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, along with three of Pless's teammates in seniors Brett Epler (Wellesley, Mass.), Chris Murtagh (Rowley, Mass.) and Ethan Waldman (Playa del Rey, Calif.) to be held this upcoming weekend, May 26-28, at Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware, Ohio. Ohio Wesleyan will serve as host at Selby Field and George Gauthier Track.
