Men's track and field impresses at both BU and USM

GORHAM, Maine and BOSTON -- A split-up Bates men's track and field team produced some standout results on Saturday at both the Terrier Classic at Boston University, and at the USM Invitational. The Bobcats took first place among eight competing teams at the USM Invitational, outscoring runner-up Emmanuel 136 points to 99.

Terrier Classic Highlights

  • Junior David Pless (Atlanta, Ga.) placed third overall, second among collegians and first among Division III athletes in the shot put, with a top put of 54-10.25. Pless unloaded a final effort of 18.21 meters, or 59-9, to finish fourth in the weight throw. His previous career best in the weight came last week at 58-2.
  • First-year Sean Enos (Lynnfield, Mass.) had another strong day, taking 12th place in the weight throw (49-10) and 16th in the shot put (46-2.75).
  • Junior James LePage (Cumberland, Maine) ran an impressive 1:54.40 in the 800 meters, the second-best time among Division III runners. Senior Peter Corcoran (Stillwater, Minn.) ran a 1:56.31, 13th-best in Division III.
  • Sophomore Noah Graboys (Glencoe, Ill.) ran an excellent time of 14:50.27 in the 5,000 meters, 31st out of 50 overall.
  • First-year John Stansel (Newburyport, Mass.) took 19th place among 45 runners in the 1,000 meters, at 2:34.84.
  • Junior Nick Barron (Kirkwood, Mo.) finished the mile in 4:22.60.
  • Sophomore Tully Hannan (West Hartford, Conn.) recorded a time of 8:39.12 in the unseeded men's 3,000 meters race.
  • Sophomore Mike Martin (Slatersville, R.I.) finished 10th in the men's unseeded 5,000 meters, in 15:02.96, while senior Ben Chebot (Newton, Mass.) was 16th in 15:14.59.

USM Invitational Highlights

  • Senior Duncan Briggs (Arrowsic, Maine) won the triple jump at 40-11.5, and also placed second in the long jump, at 19-3.5.
  • Sophomore Chris Halsted (Lincoln, Mass.) and first-year Charley Kenyon (East Amherst, N.Y.) swept the first two spots in the 55-meter hurdles, at 8.70 and 8.86 seconds in the finals, respectively. Kenyon recorded a 8.58 in prelims, best in the field.
  • Senior Sam Wood (Waterville, Maine) placed second in the mile, at 4:41.07.
  • First-year Sam Polich (Westborough, Mass.) was third in the 600 meters, at 1:29.93.
  • Senior captain Sean Colligan (Goffstown, N.H.) came in second in the 3,000 meters, at 9:26.32.
  • Sophomore John Wisener (Ridgewood, N.J.) won the pole vault at 13-5.25.

Bates will host the venerable Maine Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships next Saturday, Feb. 4, at 6pm in Merrill Gymnasium.
