NEW ORLEANS -- The Bates men's track and field team was twice honored on Thursday, as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its Division III regional award winners for the indoor season. Bates junior David Pless received New England Men's Field Athlete of the Year, while head coach Al Fereshetian was named New England Men's Coach of the Year.
Pless (Atlanta, Ga.) is competing in this weekend's NCAA Division III indoor championships as the No. 4 seed in the shot put and the sixth seed in the weight throw. It will be his first NCAA weight throw competition for the two-time All-America selection, who a year ago won the shot put title. Pless competes in the weight throw on Friday starting at 5pm Central, then in the shot put on Saturday at 12pm.
Fereshetian has guided the Bobcats to an incredible indoor season, which has included the team's first indoor New England Division III and ECAC Division III team championships. In addition to Pless competing in two events this weekend at nationals, the team will also compete in the distance medley relay as the sixth seed. The DMR squad is comprised of junior Nick Barron (Kirkwood, Mo.), sophomore Ben Levy (Belmont, Mass.), junior James LePage (Cumberland, Maine) and sophomore Noah Graboys (Glencoe, Ill.). The DMR competes Friday at 7:05 Central.
It is the third Coach of the Year honor in the past year for Fereshetian: last fall he was named NESCAC Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year, and last spring he earned NESCAC Men's Track & Field Coach of the Year honors.
