PRINCETON, N.J. -- Making its first trip to the Sam Howell Invitational at Princeton University, the Bates men's track and field team had six athletes competing well in four different events in Friday's action. The meet concludes on Saturday.
Senior David Pless (Atlanta, Ga.) took fifth place among 12 athletes overall, fourth among collegians, in the hammer throw, at 187-1. Sophomore Sean Enos (Lynnfield, Mass.) took eighth place at 167-3.
Junior Mike Martin (Slatersville, R.I.) placed eighth out of 27 competitors, fourth in Division III, in the 3,000 steeplechase, with a time of 9:20.99. Senior Graham Pearsall (Guilford, Maine) was 16th in 9:38.05.
Junior Tully Hannan (West Hartford, Conn.) placed 20th among 64 competitors, 15th among collegians, in the 5,000 meters, in 14:37.34.
Senior Ken Whitney (West Hartford, Conn.) finished first in the "Division 2" 10,000-meter run, in 31:11.63.
Teams with athletes competing include: Adelphi, Bates, Binghamton, Boston College, Bowdoin, Brown, Bryn Mawr, Buffalo, Columbia, Connecticut College, Cornell, Cortland, Dartmouth, Georgian Court, Gwynedd-Mercy, Harvard, Haverford, Iona, Ithaca, Kent State, Kutztown, La Salle, Lincoln (Pa.), Marietta, Middlebury, Monmouth, Monroe College, Moravian, NJIT, Penn, Plattsburgh, Rhode Island, Rider, Rowan, Rutgers, Rutgers-Camden, Sacred Heart, S. Connecticut State, St. John’s, St. Peter’s, Swarthmore, Syracuse, TCNJ, Tufts, UMass-Lowell, Vassar, Villanova, Wesleyan, Widener, Yale, York (Pa.). In addition, more than 25 track & field clubs have athletes competing.
