Wainman, Hardison start NED3 meet off right in heptathlon

LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates sophomore Eric Wainman and senior captain David Hardison got the Bates men's indoor track and field team off to a strong start Friday as the New England Division III Men's Indoor Championships got started with the first four events of the heptathlon.

Among 12 competitors in the event, Wainman (Glastonbury, Conn.) is in second place with 2,698 points, while Hardison is third with 2,596.

"Great day for both David and Eric," said head coach Al Fereshetian. "Eric is up 180 points over his qualifying heptathlon, and David is also up over 100 points."

The final three events of the heptathlon -- the 60 hurdles, the pole vault and the 1,000 meters -- get started Saturday, with the rest of the NED3 indoor championships getting started at 10:30am in Merrill Gymnasium.
