Men's track ties for eighth place at Indoor New Englands

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The Bates men's track and field team used seven point-scoring, All-New England performances to tie for eighth place out of 28 scoring teams Saturday at the New England Division III Men's Indoor Championships.

Bates scored 30 points, tying with Coast Guard for eighth-most among 28 teams that scored points for top-eight event performances.

Senior Adedire Fakorede (Newark, N.J.) placed third in the weight throw with a top effort of 60-1, and he took fifth place in the shot put (46-6.25) for a combined 10 team points.

Junior Mark Fusco (Cheshire, Conn.) had a hand in 12 team points. Fusco scored half of them by taking third place in the 600 meters, with a time of 1:22.44.

Mark Fusco also ran the 800-meter leg of Bates' third-place distance medley relay, which finished in 1:23.85, 0.80 behind runner-up Bowdoin and 0.52 ahead of fourth-place Williams. Junior Ian Wax (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) led off in the 1,200 meters, followed by senior Rob Flynn (Bedford, N.H.) in the 400, Fusco in the 800 and senior Jack Kiely (Severna Park, Md.) in the 1,600.

Sophomore Brendan Donahue (Wolfeboro Falls, N.H.) finished fourth in the heptathlon with a career-best 4,313 points, third most in team history. Donahue was second in the field in the high jump (a career-best 6-0) and tied for second in the pole vault (11-11.75).

Senior Garrett Anderson (Raleigh, N.C.) placed sixth in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 14-9.5.

Sophomore Justin Levine (Boca Raton, Fla.) placed eighth in the 5,000 meters (15:15.36).

Bates will compete in the Maine State Open at the University of Southern Maine next Saturday, Feb. 24 at noon.
