BOSTON -- The Bates College men's cross country team beat out all teams but one at the 21-team James Earley Invitational, hosted by Westfield State College at Stanley Park on Saturday. Bates scored 42 points behind only nationally ranked Trinity College with 36 and well ahead of third-place Vassar (107).

Bates senior Matt Dunlap (Farmington, Maine) and sophomore Doug Brecher (Waban, Mass.) paced the Bobcats by finishing in third and fourth place, respectively, out of 244 runners. Dunlap covered the 8-kilometer course in 26:46, with Brecher just a second behind.

Senior Harrison Little (Hanover, N.H.) also registered in the top 10 with a ninth-place time of 27:23. Finishing out Bates' top seven were sophomore Griffin Stabler (Keene, N.H.) in 13th (27:40), senior Andrew Percy (Woodbridge, Conn.) in 14th (27:42) and senior Tim McCall (Lawrenceville, N.J.) in 20th (28:01).

"Trinity held out their top two guys, but we ran very competitively with them otherwise, and they're ranked No. 2 in New England," said Bates head coach Al Fereshetian.

Bates will host the State of Maine Cross Country Championships next Saturday at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester. The men's race will start at 11 a.m., with the women following at noon.
