Season Review: Men's XC posts strongest season in years

Matt Dunlap '08

The Bates men's cross country team had one of its best seasons in years in 2007.

A strong group of seniors led by Matt Dunlap (All-State, All-NESCAC and All-Region), along with Harrison Little, Andrew Percy, Tim McCall and Will Viti, led the team through an intense year of training and preparation, yielding outstanding improvements and an exceptional finish to the season.

Bates placed among the top ten in New England at the regional championships with easily their best performance of the year, as all seven runners recorded lifetime bests. Dunlap's 15th-place finish qualified him to participate as an individual at the NCAA Division III Championships in Northfield, Minn. Earning All-Region recognition along with Dunlap was sophomore Doug Brecher.

With 262 points at New Englands, Bates was a mere two points shy of ninth-place Brandeis for ninth place, and five points ahead of the host and 11th-place Camels. Bates also beat out two NESCAC teams, Connecticut College and Middlebury, that finished ahead of the Bobcats at NESCACs. It was Bates' highest finish at New Englands since 2004, when they were fourth en route to a team berth in the NCAA Championships.

Brecher will team up in 2008 with fellow underclassmen Dillon Tung '09, Griffin Stabler '10 and Alex Hegevall-Clarke '11, who all gained valuable regional experience that will really help in future years.
