Dilts paces men's cross country to sixth place at NESCACs

MANCHESTER, Conn. -- The Bates College men's cross country team finished sixth out of 11 teams Sunday at the NESCAC Cross Country Championships, hosted by Trinity at Wickham Park, the Bobcats' best place at the conference meet since 2004, when they were third.

With 172 points, Bates edged Hamilton by four points for sixth place, despite the Continentals' Peter Kosgei winning the individual title for the third straight year. The Bobcats were also ahead of Wesleyan, Connecticut College, Trinity and Colby.

Junior Devin Dilts (Roscoe, Ill.) paced the Bobcats by finishing 11th overall out of 121 competitors, which earned him NESCAC All-Conference Second Team honors in cross country (see the NESCAC Cross Country All-Conference Teams release in PDF format here). Dilts covered the 8-kilometer course in 26:47.

Junior Tom Esponnette (Auburn, Maine) ran his finest cross country race thus far, finishing 19th overall in a time of 27:21.

Senior Doug Brecher (Waban, Mass.) came next for the Bobcats, finishing 44th (27:58), followed closely by sophomore Sean Colligan (Goffstown, N.H.) in 48th (28:01). Ryan Rice (Franklin, Mass.) led a trio of Bates freshmen in 62nd (28:17), followed by Andrew Wortham (Newton, Mass.) in 68th (28:28) and Eric Kimball (Manchester, Mass.) in 69th (28:29). Senior Griff Stabler (Keene, N.H.) was 75th (28:46), a second ahead of first-year Graham Pearsall (Guilford, Maine), who was 76th (28:47).

Bates next competes at the ECAC Division III Championships, next Saturday at Williams.
