Third-place Brecher leads men's XC to third at ECACs







WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Bates College men's cross country team took third place out of 43 teams Saturday at the ECAC Division III Cross Country Championships, hosted by Williams College at Mount Greylock High School.

The Bobcats scored 101 points, beating out Amherst (111) for third. Williams won the meet with 85 points, followed by St. Vincent (Pa.) with 89.

Senior Doug Brecher (Waban, Mass.) blazed to take third place out of 296 runners overall, covering the 8-kilometer course in 26:48.0, good for All-ECAC honors. Senior Conor Welch (Newburyport, Mass.) was 16th in 27:26.4, first-year Andrew Wortham (Newton, Mass.) was 26th in 27:41.6, followed by first-year Eric Kimball (Manchester, Mass.) in 28th at 27:45.5, sophomore Troy Calandra (San Francisco, Calif.) in 32nd (27:51.8), first-year Graham Pearsall (Guilford, Maine) in 41st (28:03.0) and junior Peter Gurney (Arlington, Va.) in 56th (28:18.1).

Bates competes close to home next Saturday at the New England Division III Championships, hosted by the University of Southern Maine at Twinbrook Recreation Area in Cumberland.
