Men's XC overwhelms Colby in opening home meet

NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine -- The No. 19 nationally ranked Bates men's cross country team debuted the 2011 season with a dominating performance against Colby in the rivals' Class Relays meet, a recent tradition between the teams held at Bates' Pineland Farms home course.

With races split up into First-Year/Sophomore and Junior/Senior tilts, Bates swept the top five spots in both, leading to a perfect 80-30 outcome under a modified scoring system in which high score wins. Sophomore Tully Hannan (West Hartford, Conn.) ran the best time of the day over the 6-kilometer course, at 19:11, to win the race of the younger athletes, followed by sophomore Mike Martin (Slatersville, R.I.) in 19:47, first-years Camden Black-Ingersoll (Concord, N.H.) and John Stansel (Newburyport, Mass.) at 20:00 apiece and first-year Christian Sampson (Brookline, Mass.) in fifth at 20:08.

Senior captain Devin Dilts (Roscoe, Ill.) finished first in the Junior/Senior race, in 19:42, followed by junior Ken Whitney (West Hartford, Conn.) in 20:02, junior captain Eric Kimball (Manchester, Mass.) in 20:04, junior Graham Pearsall (Guilford, Maine) in fourth at 20:08 and senior Ben Chebot (Newton, Mass.) in fifth at 20:09.

Bates competes at the Maine Invitational next Saturday at Bowdoin, with the women's race starting at 2:30 p.m. and the men's race following at 3:15.
