BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Bates College junior Nordic skier Sylvan Ellefson followed up his fourth-place finish in the 10K Freestyle on Wednesday with an 18th-place showing in the 20K Mass Start Classic Technique race on Friday, as the Nordic portion of the NCAA Skiing Championships concluded at Montana State University.
Ellefson (Vail, Colo.), who won his first NCAA All-America honors on Wednesday, completed the 20-kilometer course at Bohart Ranch in 1:05.59, beating out the University of Denver's Haavard Selseng by 0.7 seconds for 18th place.
Ellefson scored 22 team points with his effort on Friday. With 103 points, the four-member Bates contingent at NCAAs have combined to place 16th out of 21 teams, behind Montana State (112) and ahead of Michigan Tech (63). Ellefson's teammates on the women's alpine ski team -- first-year Micaela Holland, junior Emily Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.) and junior Liz Thompson (Rangeley, Maine) -- will compete tomorrow in the slaloms at Bridger Bowl on the final day of NCAAs.
