RUMFORD, Maine -- The Bates College nordic ski team placed fifth in both the Women's 10K Classic and Men's 10K Classic races Saturday at Black Mountain, bringing the nordic portion of the Bates College Winter Carnival to a close.
The Bates ski teams wound up in fifth place out of 12 teams overall when the alpine events concluded the Carnival on Sunday.
Bates junior Sam Evans-Brown (Gilmanton Iron Works, N.H.) led the men's team in the 10K Classic in seventh place out of 94 competitors overall, finishing in 26:49.1 and earning 30 points for the Bobcats. Sophomore Brandon Cooper (Aspen, Colo.) came next in 19th place at 27:30.2, followed by junior Dylan Mogk (Bozeman, Mont.) in 24th in 27:45.8 and sophomore Harry Poole (Yarmouth, Maine) in 31st at 28:07.4.
A trio of Bates women placed in the top 20 out of 89 competitors in the Women's 10K Classic race. First-year Natalie Ruppertsberger (Plainfield, N.H.) led the way in 17th place with a time of 34:27.0, followed directly by first-year Megan McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.) in 18th at 34:45.2. Sophomore Abby Samuelson (Freeport, Maine) came in 20th at 35:07.2, and two more first-years, Kristen Gill (Jackson, N.H.) and Ingrid Knowles (Cumberland, Maine), also made the top 30 at 24th and 28th places, respectively.
Defending NCAA champion Dartmouth College opened the 2008 Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association (EISA) winter carnival season with a first-place team finish. Middlebury College finished second with 640.0 points to Dartmouth's 666.0. The University of Vermont placed third out of the 12 competing teams with 578.0 points, and the University of New Hampshire (502.0) and host Bates (485.0) rounded out the top five.
The EISA circuit resumes this weekend at the St. Lawrence University Winter Carnival.
