Nordic team impressive in freestyle race at St. Lawrence

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- The Bates College men's Nordic skiing squad had a bounce-back performance of sorts on Saturday, the final day of the St. Lawrence Carnival at Mt. Van Hovenburg. A day after finishing eighth as a unit in the 10K Classical race, the Bates men came in fourth out of 14 teams in the 20K Freestyle race.

Bates' combined Nordic and alpine ski teams finished sixth out of 15 teams at the carnival, with 547 points, between fifth-place Williams (577) and seventh-place Colby (498.5).

Leading the way for Bates was senior Brandon Cooper (Aspen, Colo.), who placed 10th out of 99 skiers overall with a time of 56:20.6. First-year Lucas Milliken (North Yarmouth, Maine) came in 16th in 56:59.1 and senior Harry Poole (Yarmouth, Maine) rounded out the scoring in 26th place at 59:30.6. With 82 points, Bates outscored rivals such as Williams (78), Vermont (70) and Colby (54).

The Bates women were sixth out of 14 teams in the 15K Freestyle race, as junior Natalie Ruppertsberger (Plainfield, N.H.) notched her second top-10 finish in as many days, placing ninth in a time of 49:53.8. Senior Abby Samuelson (Freeport, Maine) had her second straight top-25 finish, coming in 24th in 51:55.9. Next for Bates was junior Kirsten Gill (Jackson, N.H.) in 27th and first-year Gretchen Sellegren (Bozeman, Mont.) in 34th (53:01.7).

Next up for Bates Nordic is the St. Michael's Carnival next weekend at Sleepy Hollow.

Friday Recap

The Bates women's Nordic skiing squad led the way with a third-place showing in the Women's 5K Classic Technique race as the EISA carnival season got under way on Friday at the St. Lawrence Carnival.

2009 NCAA Championships competitor Natalie Ruppertsberger got off to a strong start to the 2010 season, finishing sixth out of 97 competitors overall in a time of 16:34.1. Also scoring for the Bobcats were Gretch Sellegren, who came in 19th overall in 17:03.5, and Abby Samuelson, who was right behind in 20th at 17:04.3. Their three performances combined to give Bates 82 points, good for third out of 13 teams in the event and only two points behind second-place Middlebury.

Two veterans led the Bates men's squad in the 10K Classical. Harry Poole was 27th overall out of 98 competitors in a time of 30:11.6, while Brandon Cooper was right behind in 278th (30:12.8). Lucas Milliken rounded out the Bobcats' top three in a time of 31:48.1, good for 50th place.
