HUNTINGTON, Vt. - The Bates women's Nordic team secured an eighth place finish out of 29 teams in the 3x3 sprint relay, in the final day of racing at the St. Michael's Winter Carnival.
The eighth place relay team for Bates finished in a combined time of 39:15. The team was comprised of junior Natalie Ruppertsberger (Plainfield, N.H.), senior Abby Samuelson (Freeport, Maine) and first-year Gretchen Sellegren (Bozeman, Mont.).
The relay team of juniors Kristen Gill (Jackson, N.H.) and Megan McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.), as well as sophomore Sophie Leonard (Mammoth Lakes, Calif.) also skied a strong race. This 3x3 team finished 19th with a combined time of 41:0.1.
The men's Nordic team competed in the 3x3 sprint relay race today as well with the top Bates team placing 15th out of 28 teams with a combined time of 33:09.9. The 15th place relay team was made up of seniors Brandon Cooper (Aspen, Colo.) and Harry Poole (Yarmouth, Maine), and first-year Lucas Milliken (North Yarmouth, Maine).
Bates first-year skiers Corey Hill (Keene, N.H.), Jimmy Burnham (Carlisle, Mass.) and Daniel Kuzio (Moretown, Vt.) also competed in the sprint relay, racing to a 23rd-place finish with a combined time of 34:57.1.
Bates' combined alpine and Nordic ski teams finished in eighth place (471.5) out of 12 teams at the carnival. The Bobcats finished well ahead of Harvard (350), host St. Michael's (343), Bowdoin (149) and UMaine Presque Isle (93).
The Bobcats strap on their skis for competition again Feburary 5th and 6th at the University of Vermont Winter Carnival at the Trapp Family Lodge.
Ruppertsberger continued her impressive skiing in the women's 10K Free Technique, racing to a 17th out of 85 competitors (32:52.9). Samuelson and Gill were only eight and nine seconds behind their teammate finishing in 20th and 21st place respectively.
On the men’s side, three first-year skiers led the men’s Nordic team in the 15K Free Technique race. Milliken led the Bobcats with a 31st place finish out of 61 competitors (45:21.9). Milliken has scored points for Bates in all three of their races so far this season.
Burnham recorded his first point-scoring race of his young Bates career with a 44th place finish (46:53.2). Rounding out the top three for the Bobcats was Hill in 51st place (47:55.7). The race was Hill’s first point-scoring race of his career.
